Sky Sport For Living 2016
An initiative set up only the past couple of years in the Republic, Sky Sports For Living has been ongoing for quite a while in the UK.
The programme is aimed at developing young people’s life skills through the medium of sport.
Magh Ene College has been involved with the programme through our P.E department over the last two years.
Each school is assigned a high profile sports person as their mentor. For the past two years we were fortunate to have Donegal’s Christy Toye. This year Magh Ene College are delighted to welcome our first female mentor, Cora Staunton. Cora is also a senior county Gaelic player who comes from Mayo.
Cora will meet with this years’ TY Sky Sports students for a workshop on Friday 16th December. The group will work together to examine the key skills of the programme. These skills are shown to boost confidence and increase attainment amongst other qualities. They will then carry out their coaching project and meet again with Cora for a follow up session in the New Year.
The Sky Sports project will involve our TY students coaching basketball to our local 6th class students from St Macartans over a number of weeks. The project will culminate in a basketball blitz for the 6th class students organised by the TY students themselves.
Our Sky Sports students’ have also been very fortunate in successfully securing a place among 300 students who will take part in The Katie Taylor Inspirational Day, Tuesday 24th January, at the National Sports Campus in Dublin. The students will meet with Katie Taylor and other high profile Sky Sports mentors to gain experience from listening to their experiences and by participating in activities with them on the day.
